Conservatory to Garden Room Transformation

An old, run-down conservatory transformed into a modern, thermally efficient garden room with A+ rated PVCu windows, French doors, a warm tiled roof and aluminium bifold doors.

Project Overview

The customer had an older conservatory with a polycarbonate roof that had become difficult to use throughout the year. Like many traditional conservatories, it was heavily affected by the changing UK weather, meaning the space could only be comfortably enjoyed for a few months at a time.

The aim was to completely transform the existing conservatory into a modern, comfortable and thermally efficient garden room that could become a true extension of the home and be used all year round.

The Work

Abbey & Burton Glass removed the existing conservatory roof and installed a new warm tiled roof, helping to significantly improve the insulation and comfort of the room. New A+ rated PVCu windows and French doors were also installed, giving the space a fresh appearance while improving thermal performance. The new roof included Vega panels, allowing additional natural light into the room while still providing the benefits of an insulated tiled roof.

Internally, new windowboards were fitted and the ceiling was fully plastered, leaving a clean finish ready for the customer to decorate. We also replaced the existing sliding patio doors between the house and conservatory with new aluminium bifold doors. The previous sliding doors restricted the opening between the two rooms, whereas the new bifold doors can open across almost the entire width.

The Benefits of a Garden Room Transformation

Transforming the conservatory into a thermally efficient garden room has created a much more comfortable and practical living space.

The new warm tiled roof helps retain heat during colder months while reducing excessive heat during warmer periods, making the room easier to enjoy throughout the year. The A+ rated PVCu windows and doors also provide improved thermal performance, while the Vega roof panels allow natural light to continue entering the space. The aluminium bifold doors have also improved the connection between the main house and garden room, helping the two spaces feel more open and connected.

Overcoming the Challenge

One of the main priorities for the homeowner was creating a more open connection between the house and the garden room. The existing sliding patio doors limited the usable opening and restricted the sense of space between the two areas. By replacing them with aluminium bifold doors, we were able to create a much wider opening, allowing the garden room to feel like a more natural extension of the main living space.

The Result

The completed project has transformed the old conservatory into a modern, thermally efficient garden room that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

With a new warm tiled roof, Vega roof panels, A+ rated PVCu windows and French doors, aluminium bifold doors and a fully plastered internal ceiling, the room now feels much more integrated with the rest of the home. The wider bifold opening has also dramatically improved the connection between the two spaces, creating a brighter, more open and practical living area.
